Raku/Alternate Firings with Suzanne Fling
Service Description
**if you plan to also purchase a took kit, select 'add to cart' when booking your class** This class meets 6 times. Students are allowed 5 hours of lab time during the week. One 25lb. bag of clay is included. There will be no classes held 11/25-27 in observance of the Thanksgiving Holiday. In this Alternative Firing class, students will receive hands-on education to learn nontraditional firing techniques like Raku, Saggar and Horse hair. These classes will provide practical experience in creating unique surface effects and patterns on pottery by using various materials, such as smoke, soluble salts, coppers, metals, horsehairs, sugars, feathers and organics to achieve incredible results that aren't possible with standard kiln firings. Raku is addictive because it's exciting, fast-paced, and produces unique and beautiful surface effects. Best of all, it involves playing with fire! Learn why glazes craze and how to get your copper mattes radiating with colors. You’ll love the experience of working with glowing red-hot pieces in a raku kiln, uncovering pots buried in wood chips and peeling the aluminum, copper and clay off your latest saggar experiment. In classes 1-3, we will be creating work to then be fired using various alternative firing techniques during classes 4-6. Students will learn the process of mixing up Terra Sigillata and will apply it to their greenware pieces, and after firing, will polish work with tile wax. Recommended skill level: Beg+ /intermediate.
